Grundtvig 2 Learning Partnership Project
INBE — Integration by Education — The Influence of Learners on the Integrating Educational Programme

What is INBE all about?

“INBE - Integration by Education” is a partnership between five European institutions of special integrative expertise and expertise within adult education. The aim of this project is to analyse and to evaluate the actual situation concerning the design of integrating programmes in the partner countries.
Lingual, economic and social isolation determine the life of immigrants. Integrating educational programmes trying to overcome this isolation are designed according to concepts, needs and (at last financial) possibilities of the host communities. Depending on these programmes offered immigrants seem to be confined to a mostly passive role and a wait-and-see-attitude from the start. Low expectations and identification diminish the success of the programmes, at least a part of the effort is given away.
Our key questions are: Do learners have any influence on contents and methods of the programmes? Are there already approaches to achieve this? We want to explore together ways to examine and to identify actual training needs of immigrants and to find out how we can enhance the designing influence of learners on their integrating educational program. We want to learn from each other how to improve the designing influence of immigrants by exchanging experiences and good practice.

What are we going to do?

Project activities consist of visits and meetings by partner institutions, project work with the learners and staff, culminating in an international workshop in Denmark. Immigrant learners take part in every phase of the project.

Autumn 2005: Information and data is gathered by a questionnaire to all partners for a first analysis of the actual situation.

23rd –27th. November 2005 Meeting in Madrid/ Spain: „Where are we now?“
- Analysis of the actual situation of integrating programmes in Europe. Comparison of chosen approaches and applied methods.

8th –12th March 2006 International Workshop in Odense/ Denmark: „Influence of Learners on the Integrative Educational Programme - Ways to examine the Training Needs of Immigrants“
- Gathering of strategies and of examples of good practice, development of new strategies and methods to integrate learners into the design and planning of educational programmes.

3rd –7th May 2006 Final Meeting in Sassnitz (Rügen)/ Germany: “The next step”
- Evaluation of the completed project. Planning and first preparations of a future pilot project based on the results and discussed approaches of InbE.
